US presidential candidate Donald Trump has gained support of some 4 in 10 registered Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters in the United States, a new poll has found.
Some 44 percent of Americans are backing Trump’s campaign after he clinched victory on Tuesday in New Hampshire’s GOP primary, according to a Morning Consult survey released on Friday.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz comes in a distant second, with 17 percent of support, while retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Florida Senator Marco Rubio finish in third place, with 10 percent each.
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has support of 8 percent voters and Ohio Governor John Kasich is only popular among 4 percent of voters.
Six percent of voters said they “don’t know” or have “no opinion” on which Republican candidate they support.
Pollsters also found that Trump is viewed favorably by more than 6 in 10 of Republican Party’s voters. The New York billionaire has a 67 percent favorability rating, while Rubio takes 62 percent and Cruz 61 percent.
The latest poll showed that Trump’s support has gone up 6 points since his triumph in New Hampshire.
Trump won 35.3 percent of the vote in New Hampshire and was followed by Kasich who received 15.8 percent.
Cruz, who had won the Iowa caucuses, was in the third place with 11.7 percent of the votes ahead of Bush, Rubio, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
