The Independent drops print edition

British newspaper The Independent will become digital only and its last print edition will come out on March 26

British newspaper The Independent will become digital only and its last print edition will come out on March 26.

"The newspaper industry is changing and that change is being driven by readers. They're showing us that the future is digital," said Evgeny Lebedev, a Russian-born British owner of The Independent in a statement.

"This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high-quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers on our online platforms," he said.

Like many newspapers, The Independent established in 1986 has struggled with falling readership numbers.

It has a total circulation of around 60,000, according to the latest figures. The paper was Britain's least-read national paper.
