India police arrest goat for raiding garden

In a bizarre incident, Indian police arrested a goat and its owner for repeatedly damaging the garden of a senior judge in the central state of Chhattisgarh.

The goat was caught grazing in the garden in Janakpur town, about 340 kilometers (211 miles) north of the state capital Raipur.

The police took action after the official's gardener herded the captured goat to the local police station and registered a complaint against the owner, Abdul Hassan, and his animal for raiding the garden. The goat has been allegedly a "repeat offender."

According to Ram Sewak Paikra, a regional police officer, Hassan and his goat were later released on bail but face initial charges of causing damage to property.

"The goat and the owner were under police custody and are out, as both the sections 427 and 447 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) are bailable offences," media outlets quoted Paikra as saying.

"After the complaint, the owner of the goat, Abdul Hassan, was also arrested for the alleged crime," the officer said, adding, "Since both the sections are bailable offences, Abdul Hassan filed a bond in the police station promising that the animal will not further damage the garden."

Sources say the charges which have been leveled against the goat and its owner can lead to two to seven years in jail.
