Iran’s Leader says​ tackling terrorism requires collective effort

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says collective efforts required for tackling terrorism.

  • The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says tackling terrorism needs a collective effort. The leader made the remarks in a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Tehran. Ayatollah Khamenei also criticized European countries for their dependence upon the US. 
  • President Hassan Rouhani says the Iranian nation never retreated in the face of threats and earned respect through its resistance. Rouhani made the remarks during a ceremony to award medals of honor to the nuclear negotiating team. He added that the implementation of the nuclear deal has turned threats into opportunities. 
  • Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has met with visiting Greek Prime Minister Tsiras in Tehran. The two leaders discussed areas of mutual concern, specially the current crisis in the Middle East. Rouhani said the fight against terrorism needs a strong determination on the part of the international community. 
  • At least 35 refugees have drowned in two separate accidents off the Turkish coast. The migrants were on their way to the Greek Island of Lesbos. Turkey is the main route for refugees fleeing wars in the Middle East and North Africa to reach Europe.
  • Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has slammed Russia for its airstrikes against terrorists in Syria. Davutoglu made the remarks during a press conference with German chancellor Angela Merkel in Ankara. Turkey has supported militant groups fighting to topple the Syrian government. 
  • Two separate bomb attacks have killed at least 9 people in Afghanistan. The first incident happened outside a bakery in Paktika province. Officials say the second bombing targeted a military bus in Balkh province. Nearly two dozen people have also been injured in the attacks. 
  • A record number of American expats are renouncing their citizenship due to Washington’s strict tax policy. Some 45-hundred individuals did so in 2015 in comparison with over 34-hundred people the previous year. US authorities have collected billions from foreign banking institutions and Americans in taxes and penalties.
  • The United Nations has warned that over 58-thousand children will starve to death in Somalia if they are not provided with urgent support. UN officials say that more than three-hundred thousand children under the age of five are acutely malnourished.
