Taiwan quake toppled several buildings, leaving five dead

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • In Taiwan, a magnitude six-point-four earthquake has toppled a number of buildings in the city of Tainan leaving at least five people dead. Search operations are underway to rescue those feared trapped inside the collapsed buildings. The president is on his way to the city.
  • Syrian government forces have liberated the town of Mayer in the northern Aleppo province. Syrian forces earlier freed the town Rat-yan, northwest of the city of Aleppo. In the south, Syrian troops took full control of Atman town in the countryside of the city of Dara’a on Friday.
  • Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has rejected accusations that Moscow has torpedoed Syrian peace talks in Geneva. The West blames the breakdown in talks on Russia's military support for the Syrian government’s offensive against terrorists in northwestern Aleppo province.
  • The Iraqi army has purged Daesh terrorists from the region of Sajariyah east of the city of Ramadi. An Iraqi commander says around 80 terrorists were killed in the fighting. Iraqi forces recaptured the city of Ramadi from Daesh terrorists last December.
  • The U-N Secretary General says 34 militant groups from around the world have reportedly pledged allegiance to Daesh terrorists since mid-December. Ban Ki-moon predicted an increase in the number of attacks by Daesh-affiliated terror groups from countries such as the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Libya and Nigeria.
  • Yemen's Ansarullah fighters and allied army units have killed at least 9 Saudi soldiers in Tawwal border crossing in the kingdom’s Jizan province. Yemeni forces have carried out such attacks against Saudi troops in response to Riyadh’s months-long aggression which has killed over 83-hundred Yemenis.
  • In Bahrain, anti-government protesters have taken to the streets in several villages ahead of the fifth anniversary of the country’s revolution. The protesters pledged to press ahead with demonstrations despite Manama’s fierce crackdown on dissidents. They further renewed calls for the release of jailed activists.
  • Spain's Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has refused to negotiate with the Socialists who have recently been tasked with forming a government. The discord comes after leader of the socialists Pedro Sanchez dismissed an ultimatum by Podemos to cancel talks with another party.
