Earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude hits south of Taiwan

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • A magnitude six-point-four earthquake has struck south of Taiwan causing damage to several buildings in the city of Tainan. Search operations are underway to rescue hundreds of people feared trapped inside the collapsed buildings. No casualties have been reported. 
  • A huge crane has collapsed in downtown US city of Manhattan in New York. At least one person was killed and two others were injured in the incident. There was damage to the roof of a nearby building and debris littered the street. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
  • At least 19 people die as a fire engulfs a hotel in the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region. The victims died after becoming trapped in one of the rooms of the hotel in Erbil. Most of the victims were from the Philippines. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
  • Yemen's Ansarullah fighters and allied army units have killed at least 9 Saudi soldiers in Tawwal border crossing in the kingdom’s Jizan province. Yemeni forces have carried out such attacks against Saudi troops in response to Riyadh’s months-long aggression which has killed over 83-hundred Yemenis.
  • In Bahrain, anti-government protesters have taken to the streets in several villages ahead of the fifth anniversary of the country’s revolution. The protesters pledged to press ahead with demonstrations despite Manama’s fierce crackdown on dissidents. They further renewed calls for the release of jailed activists.
  • Syrian forces have liberated the town of Rityan in Aleppo province in a major military operation. Syria’s military has also took full control of Atman town in the countryside of the southern city of Dara’a. A UK-based opposition group said clashes in the north of the country left some 120 troopers and militants dead.
  • US Secretary of State John Kerry says it will be clear within days if ongoing talks on a ceasefire in Syria will achieve a breakthrough. Kerry noted that Russians have proposed some constructive ideas about how a truce could be implemented in the war-hit country.
  • Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion says his country is willing to re-engage with Iran by lifting sanctions on financial services, imports and exports. Dion also said Ottawa is considering the restoration of diplomatic ties with Tehran which were severed in 2012.
