A bus crash has left at least 37 people dead in western India.

"The death toll has risen to 37. At least 24 others are admitted to hospital for treatment," senior administrative official Remya Mohan in Navsari told AFP on Friday.

The packed passenger bus plunged off a bridge into the Purna river in Navsari, some 285 kilometers (180 miles) from the city of Ahmadabad.

The accident reportedly happened when the driver lost control and veered off the road.

Roads in India are among the most unsafe in the world, with more than 230,000 fatalities annually, according to the World Health Organization.

Transport analysts attribute the high number of road fatalities not only to poor condition of the roads, but also the badly maintained vehicles driven by reckless drivers.
