Ali Akbar Velayati, a top advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

A senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iran and Russia must boost “strategic and long-term” relations to repel threats posed by the US and Western governments.

“Strategic relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation are conducive to regional and international peace and stability,” Ali Akbar Velayati, who advises Ayatollah Khamenei on international affairs, said in an address to a seminar entitled ‘Russian-Iranian Cooperation in the Current Geopolitical Conditions’ in Moscow on Wednesday.

The ongoing developments in the world are the outcome of unilateral policies, he said, noting that Tehran-Moscow cooperation can help establish a just global order.

“Iran and Russia have strategic relations and interests and share views on regional and international issues,” Velayati said.

He also stressed the importance of better Tehran-Moscow relations in the fields of politics, defense, trade, investment and technology.

Velayati arrived in Moscow on Monday to hold talks with senior Russian officials on ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The visit comes at the invitation of Director of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies Leonid Petrovich Reshetnikov.

Velayati last visited Moscow in January 2015 as a special envoy for Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, during which he conveyed the Iranian president’s message to President Vladimir Putin.
