Scientists say that they can explain how the Earth’s moon was created.

A new research conducted at the University of California indicates that the moon was created by a head-on collision between the Earth and a newly forming planet called Theia.

The collision took place 100 million years after the formation of the Earth. Previous studies showed that it occurred at an angle of 45 degrees and not just as violent.

The findings are based on analyzing the oxygen atoms of the volcanic rocks from both the earth and its moon.
