Ted Cruz wins Republican race in Iowa caucuses

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz has won the Iowa caucuses in the first vote of the US 2016 presidential election. Votes in the Democratic race are still being counted, with Hillary Clinton leading Bernie Sanders by less than one percent.
     
  • Human Rights Watch has released a report slamming human right violations in the United States. The report on the situation of human rights in 2015 says many US laws and practices violate internationally-recognized human rights. It also blasts racial discriminations against African-Americans in the country.
     
  • French authorities have demolished a makeshift mosque and church at the Calais Jungle refugee camp. A local official said the demolition was aimed at establishing a 100-meter safe zone around the perimeter of the camp. The destruction has outraged refugees and activists at the site.
     
  • Belgium and France have agreed to boost counter-terror cooperation to prevent future terrorist attacks. In a meeting in Brussels, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and his French counterpart Manuel Valls also pledged to step up intelligence sharing and police cooperation between the two counties.
     
  • In Germany, pro- and anti-refugee protesters have staged separate rallies in the city of Leipzig. Supporters of the anti-Islam and anti-refugee LEGIDA group protested against the government’s open door refugee policy, while pro-refugee demonstrators accused the far-right group of fascism.
     
  • Pro-Kurdish activists have rallied in the German city of Hamburg to slam the government’s close ties with Turkey. The protesters denounced Berlin’s support for Ankara’s military campaign against the Kurds in the country’s southeast, and urged the government to cut diplomatic relations with Turkey.
     
  • Israel is set to release another suspect of last July’s deadly arson attack in the occupied West Bank which killed three members of a Palestinian family, including an 18-month-old Palestinian toddler. Eviatar Slonim will be freed in the coming days, after being in detention for six months.
     
  • In Yemen, one person has been killed and seven others were wounded in fresh Saudi airstrikes in Dhamar province. Earlier, Saudi forces shelled the border province of Sa’ada, killing a mother and her daughter. Over 8,300 Yemenis have been killed in Saudi attacks since March 2015.
