Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The U-S Secretary of State has called on Syria’s warring sides to make the most of the UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva. John Kerry said years of conflict proved that the Syrian crisis cannot be resolved by military means. He said a political solution paves the way for defeating Daesh.
  • The Syrian government delegation to peace talks in Switzerland says it is open to unconditional dialog with the opposition to help end the bloodshed in the country. Head of the delegation Bashar al-Ja'afari also ruled out pre-conditions set by the Saudi-backed opposition groups for attending the negotiations.
  • At least 50 people have been killed in a series of bomb blasts in the Syrian capital Damascus. Over a hundred people were also wounded as three bombs went off near the Sayyidah Zeinab Shrine. Damascus has condemned the bombings which have been claimed by Daesh terror group.
  • Yemeni forces launch more retaliatory attacks against Saudi Arabia. At least five Saudi soldiers have been killed by sniper fire from Yemeni forces in Jizan. The attacks came shortly after Saudi warplanes carried out six airstrikes on Baqim district in the northern Sa'ada province.
  • The health condition of a hunger-striking Palestinian journalist in an Israeli prison has gravely deteriorated. The family and the lawyer of Mohammed al-Qiq say he has lost the ability to speak and most of his hearing. Qiq has been on hunger strike for over two months to protest his illegal detention.
  • At least two Egyptian soldiers have been killed in a roadside bomb explosion in the restive Sinai Peninsula. Local officials say the incident took place early in the morning and the bomb was handmade. The blast also injured two people, one of them critically.
  • An attack by Boko Haram terrorists in northeastern Nigeria has left at least 86 people dead. The Nigerian army says the terrorists used guns and explosives and burnt down houses in their attack on a village near the city of Maiduguri. Scores of people have been injured, some critically.
