At least 12 people, believed to be migrant workers, have lost their lives in a fire at a Russian sewing factory located in the eastern part of the capital, Moscow, emergency officials say.

The blaze broke out in the city’s eastern Sokolniki district late on Saturday night and was extinguished about five hours later, authorities said, adding that the fire engulfed an area covering 3,000 square meters in the building.

Pavel Astakhov, Russian children’s rights ombudsman, said on his Twitter account that three children were among the dead, adding that the victims were migrant workers who lived beside their workplace.

An investigation is underway into the incident, whose cause is still unknown.

A police source said several sources of fire have been discovered at the site, leading the investigators to suspect the building might have been set ablaze deliberately to hide a crime.

It is not immediately clear if the deaths were caused by the fire or by criminal actions before it, the source said, adding that it is now being investigated by forensic experts.
