Tariq Ramadan's speech at Moscow Cathedral Mosque (I)

Tariq Ramadan

In December 2015 Professor Tariq Ramadan gave a speech at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque about his famous book "In The Footsteps of the Prophet" which was recently translated into Russian.

The book is a fresh and perceptive look at the Prophet. Ramadan provides both an intimate portrait of a man who was reserved, kind, but determined, as well as a dramatic chronicle of a leader who launched a great religion and inspired a vast empire.

More important, Ramadan presents the main events of the Prophet's life in a way that highlights his spiritual and ethical teachings.

The book has been written throughout the following major fields:

1- Implementing Islamic studies and Islamic sciences I tried to come back to the Islamic traditions and scriptural sources of Quran, Hadith to get a sense of how can we be faithful today to the Quran, to our texts, and to the Sunna and at the same time to face to the challenges of our time.

2- Muslims in Muslim majority countries. I was working on some challenges such as democratization, education, social justice, environment, culture as well as economics.

3- Western Muslims, or Muslims in the west as minorities.

This book is based on more authentic traditions, which are related to prophet (PBUH) life. I tried to come to the faithfulness to our tradition but also tried  to respond to today’s needs. How do we have to read prophet’s life today?

Quran says: Say if you love God, follow me God will love you. The way that we are connected to God is by following the prophet (PBUH). This should be through love towards God.

Very often Muslims and especially when we are minorities we end up reducing Islam to a set of Halal/Haram, lawful/unlawful issues rather having the spiritual connection to God, which is love. Quran says: follow prophet (PBUH) as the best model.

It is difficult to introduce the prophet’s life to the Muslims around the world with various languages and understandings. This is my challenge, which is how to be faithful to the legacy, but at the same time to translate this into understanding him today. Understanding him at the present time.
