Groups sympathetic to armed militia occupying a wildlife refuge in the US state of Oregon have called on the militants to remain calm after one member of the group was killed and eight others arrested.

The Pacific Patriots Network, an umbrella group for regional militias, said it would "not pursue any action until all of the facts have been pieced together,” adding, "During this time, cooler heads must prevail."

The group’s statement followed the death of a spokesperson of the group, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum (pictured below) as well as the arrest of eight others including, its leader, Ammon Bundy.

The FBI only reported that "shots were fired" and one militant died.

The man was identified by the local media, however. Finicum was Arizona rancher better known to cable TV viewers as "Tarp Man."

He had previously said he was ready to die for his cause rather than spend “any of my days in a concrete box."

This file photo taken on January 15, 2016 shows Finicum speaking to the media at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters in Burns, Oregon on January 15, 2016.

The PNN affirmed on its website that the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge outside Burns, Oregon was still continuing.

According to Cliven Bundy, the father of Ammon Bundy, Finicum was killed as he “had his hands in the air.”

Cliven told CNN that the man was unarmed and not “any threat” but was “shot several times” in a “cold-blooded” manner by the FBI forces.

His 40-year-old son, Ammon was arrested in a traffic stop on Highway 395 along with his brother Ryan Bundy, 43, Bryan Cavalier, 44, Shawna Cox, 59, and Ryan Walen Payne, 32.

Ryan Bundy was reportedly shot in the arm and taken to a nearby hospital.

Another militia member, 32-year-old Jon Eric Ritzheimer, turned himself in miles away in Arizona.

Joseph Donald O'Shaughnessy, 45, and Peter Santilli, 50, were later arrested separately, in Burns.

The PNN said on its website it is in “contact with people inside the Refuge.”

“We are working on maintaining a calm presence in town and are still acting as a buffer between the Refuge and the FBI.”
