Magnesium possibly present in Earth core: Researchers

Rocky bodies that slammed into early Earth might have been integral in setting up the conditions for our magnetic field.

Researchers have found a new element which may have played a role in powering the earth’s magnetic field.

Scientists believe that magnesium might have trapped in the core along with iron since our planet’s birth. They had previously ruled out the existence of magnesium in the core because the element can’t mix with iron.

But recent theories propose that the Earth was born from a series of violent collisions with other protoplanets. And extreme temperatures and pressures created by the impact might have made possible the fusion of iron and other alloys.

Magnesium accounts for about one percent of the core. It is considered an alternative energy source for planet’s magnetic field.
