US orchestrated unrest in Syria for regime change: Analyst

Washington is bent on “ending the popularly elected government of Bashar al-Assad, replacing it with a pro-Western puppet government,” Lendman said.

The US has waged a war in Syria to bring down the country, and the Syrian peace talks that were supposed to have started in Geneva on Monday are “dead on arrival,” according to an American author and radio host.

The Obama administration orchestrated the unrest in Syria in 2011 “for the purpose of regime change” in that country, Stephen Lendman told Press TV on Monday.

Washington is bent on “ending the popularly elected government of [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad, replacing it with a pro-Western puppet government,” Lendman said.

America continues to use terrorist groups like Daesh (ISIL) and al-Qaeda affiliated militants as “US foot soldiers” because it wants Syria to be “ravaged and destroyed,” he emphasized.

“What kind of peace talks can go on when this is the scenario that’s ongoing in Syria? Lendman asked. “These people will either get what they want or they will keep waging endless wars.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed hope for “clarity” in the planned Geneva peace talks on the years-long crisis in Syria.

Kerry told reporters on a visit to Laos that he hopes for clarity on the Syrian peace talks within 24 to 48 hours.

He also said that he agreed with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura that invitations for the talks should not be sent out until "all pieces are lined up."

De Mistura has hinted that foreign-backed opposition groups in Syria who enjoy support from major governments including France, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are deliberately undermining ongoing efforts for a political solution in Syria, according to a report by the Foreign Policy magazine.

The Syrian conflict, which started in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people, according to the UN.

The world body says 12.2 million people, including more than 5.6 million children, remain in need of humanitarian assistance. The foreign-sponsored militancy has also internally displaced 7.6 million people.
