Syria peace talks to start in Geneva on January 29

UN Syria envoy Staffan De Mistura says Syria peace talks will start on January 29 in Geneva.

  • The UN's Syria envoy says Syria peace talks will begin on January 29 in Geneva. Stephan De Mistura added that the talks are set to last for six months. Discussions are now underway between Russia, the US and their regional counterparts to settle the issue of who should be invited.
  • At least five people have been killed in a terrorist attack in eastern Syria. ISIL militants fired mortar shells at a neighborhood in the city of Dayr al-Zawr. Six other people have also been injured there. 
  • Lawyers for a Palestinian journalist on a two-month hunger strike in an Israeli jail have warned about his grave health condition. Mohammed al-Qiq has been in jail since November. He’s been on hunger strike to protest torture during interrogations. Amnesty International has slammed Israel over its ill-treatment of the journalist.
  • The Bahraini regime has given extra jail terms to nearly 60 political detainees on charges of involvement in prison riots. The inmates have been convicted of mutiny following the unrest at a prison back in March. The infamous Jaw Prison is known for its harsh conditions.
  • The EU Foreign Policy Chief has called for an immediate ceasefire in Turkey's Kurdish-dominated regions. Federica Mogherini has also strongly condemned all kinds of terrorism. The Turkish army launched a military campaign against PKK militants in the southeast of the country back in July. 
  • Rights activists in Egypt have accused the government of unleashing an unprecedented crackdown against opposition members. They say the state of repression in Egypt is greater than it has been for generations. The country is marking the fifth anniversary of its revolution which toppled long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak. 
  • Asylum-seekers in the UK have been told to wear red wristbands in order to get meals. The measure has been introduced in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The asylum-seekers say the move has resulted in their harassment by members of the public. 
  • Over two dozen people have been killed in three attacks in northern Cameroon. The deadly incidents happened at a marketplace near the border with Nigeria. The area is often targeted by Boko Haram terrorists. The militants also killed a civilian and torched his house in northeastern Nigeria.
