Suspected bomb attack kills 2 Chinese nationals in Laos: Report
Two Chinese nationals have been killed and another one has been wounded in a suspected bomb attack targeting their vehicle in a remote mountainous province in the Southeast Asian country of Laos, a report says.
The suspected bombing occurred on Sunday morning when the victims were on board a vehicle on the mountain roads of Xaysomboun Province, China’s official news agency Xinhua reported Monday.
“Laos military personnel rushed to the scene and the injured, surnamed Zhou, has been shifted to a hospital in the capital, Vientiane, for treatment,” said the report.
The report did not give details about the “suspected bomb attack,” and it is unclear if the individuals were the actual targets of the assault. Xinhua identified one of the victims as an employee of a mining company operating in the mountainous center of the country.
The Chinese embassy in Vientiane confirmed the incident and demanded a prompt investigation. It urged the government in Vientiane to protect the safety of the Chinese people and their property in Laos. China is a major investor in Laos, which is rich in minerals.
The Xaysomboun region has been plagued by sporadic clashes between the government and ethnic Hmong militants for years. The militants, who have been fighting the government since it took power in 1975, were isolated in the northern hinterlands and across the border in Thailand.
