Iraq summons Saudi ambassador to Baghdad

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Bahrain’s prosecutor has summoned the jailed leader of the main opposition group Sheikh Ali Salman to question him over alleged violations in his online messages. The prosecutor’s office said there will be no new charges against Salman. He was sent back to prison to serve the rest of his four-year sentence.
  • Iraq has summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Baghdad over his recent remarks about militia forces there. Iraqi foreign ministry said it summoned Thamer al-Sabhan to protest his Quote interference in the country's internal affairs. The Saudi ambassador had said Shia volunteers are not welcome in Iraq’s Sunni and Kurdish areas.
  • Iran’s parliament speaker has described extremism, terrorism and sectarianism as huge threats to global peace and stability. Ali Larijani noted that these phenomena are the results of interventionist approaches of some countries. Larijani was speaking at a session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Baghdad.
  • Iran’s deputy foreign minister is in Tajikistan to discuss expansion of mutual ties as well as international and regional issues. Ebrahim Rahimpour is scheduled to hold talks with several Tajik officials including Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov. Fight against terrorism and extremism will also be on top of the talks’ agenda.
  • Palestinians have held a funeral for a teenage girl killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank. 13-year-old Roqaya Abu-Eid was laid to rest in the village of Yatta, south of al-Khalil. Israeli forces say they shot and killed Abu-Eid after she tried to stab an Israeli guard on Saturday.
  • There’s been a protest rally in the Dutch capital Amsterdam against Turkey’s crackdown on Kurds in its southeastern regions. The protesters also criticized Ankara's alleged support for Daesh. Rights groups have voiced concern over prolonged curfews in southeastern Turkey and growing civilian casualties.
  • Tens of thousands of opposition demonstrators have taken to the streets in Moldova's capital Chisinau. The protesters demanded Prime Minister Pavel Filip’s removal. They also called for early elections and expressed their anger at what they described as rampant corruption among the ruling elite.
  • There are still warnings of more flooding in the US East Coast after massive blizzard blanketed the region. The snow storm killed at least 19 people after it walloped 20 states on Friday and Saturday. It affected some 85 million residents prompting officials to declare a state of emergency.
