Canada school shooting leaves four dead

La Loche Community School in the village of La Loche in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is seen after the Friday shooting incident.

At least four people have been killed and two others seriously wounded in a shooting at a school in western Canada.

The deadly incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) in the aboriginal community of La Loche in the northwestern part of the province of Saskatchewan. The communality school is for pre-kindergarten to grade 12 pupils and houses up to 900 students in two buildings.

“I’m not 100 percent sure what’s actually happened but it started at home and ended at the school,” La Loche Acting Mayor Kevin Janvier said, adding that the assailant walked in and “opened fire in the building.”

“He shot two of his brothers at his home and made his way to the school,” Janvier further said, adding that his 23-year-old daughter Marie, a teacher, was also among the dead. “I’m just so sad,” he said.

Following the incident, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his “sympathy and support” for the family of the victims and thanked the first responders to the incident, who “acted swiftly and bravely.” He also said that the situation has come “under control.”

“On this sad day the whole country grieves with the people of La Loche and of Saskatchewan,” he further said.

Trudeau had initially reported that five people had lost their lives in the shooting incident, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) later set the death toll at four.

The RCMP also said in a news release that a suspect, a young man, was in custody in connection with the deadly shooting, and further details would be announced “as they become available.”
