Actor Rickman of Harry Potter fame is dead

Actor Alan Rickman died battling cancer.

British actor Alan Rickman acclaimed for his role in some of the mega films such as Harry Potter and Die Hard has died at the age of 69.   

Rickman had been battling with cancer, a family statement said while announcing Rickman’s death.

The actor was born in London and began his career in theatre. He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, before switching to TV dramas like Smiley's People and The Barchester Chronicles in the 1980s.

In 1990s, Rickman received applaud for his role as villains in films, including the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, for which he won a Bafta award.

The following year, he won a Golden Globe for best actor in a miniseries or television film for the title role in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.

Harry Potter and Die Hard are the two films that made Rickman as one of Britain's best-loved acting stars. Harry Potter author JK Rowling has sent condolences describing him as "a magnificent actor and a wonderful man".

"There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman's death", Rowling wrote on Twitter
