US Navy sacks commander for watching porn at work
A US Navy commander has been fired after using his government computer to access pornography.
Rear Admiral Rick Williams, the commander of the Navy's Carrier Strike Group 15, was relieved of his duties on Friday, the Navy said in a statement.
Navy Third Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Nora Tyson’s decision to fire Williams came after the results of an investigation into allegations of his misuse of government computer equipment, the Stars and Stripes reported.
It was revealed during a routine inspection that Williams had violated Navy rules by looking at pornographic images on his government computer, the Navy Times reported, citing a source familiar with the incident.
"They have enough information to say it wasn't just a mistake," the source added. "It was extensive enough that they knew it was not just an error."
Williams, a career surface warfare officer, took command of Carrier Strike Group 15 in July 2015.
The San Diego-based Strike Group’s primary mission is to train Pacific Fleet Carrier Strike Groups, Amphibious Ready Groups, and independently deploying surface ships before their deployment.
Before that, Williams was the commander of Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific.
In 2002, he took command of the frigate McInerney and then was assigned with Destroyer Squadron 26’s command.
Williams later became deputy 5th Fleet commander, directing maritime operations in support of military operations during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and “Enduring Freedom,” the official name used by Washington to describe the so-called war on terror.
According to his Navy biography, Williams earned his commission in 1984 after graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Before becoming executive officer of the destroyer O'Bannon, he served aboard two frigates and a hydrofoil as a junior officer.
This is the first time since 2013 that a one-star commander is being fired.
