US man shot to death on BART train

One person was shot and killed at the West Oakland BART station Saturday night according to police.

A man has been shot dead by another man inside a packed BART train in Oakland, California, authorities say.

The shooting happened on Saturday night and passengers say the train had been taken over by terrorists, police officials stated.

The shooter fled the train when it stopped at the West Oakland station which was closed immediately by officers who found the dead man in one of the train cars, BART police Lt. Kevin Franklin said.

According to witnesses, the gunman is a slim black male about 6-foot-3-inches tall, who fled on foot outside the station, Franklin added.

"Everyone just got down on the ground. People were screaming. It was chaos," Brad Chapin, a passenger, said. "We didn't know if there were terrorists there or what."

"So many people thought they were going to die," he said. "It was terrifying."

According to BART spokesman Jim Allison, the shooting took place while the San Francisco-bound train on the Pittsburg-Bay Point line was either approaching the station or stopped at the station.

Allison also said that police have taken an individual into custody, but added that the assailant is still at large.

Weak gun laws that allow for some criminals to purchase firearms legally are contributing to the high rate of gun violence in the US, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
