A US police officer has been shot and wounded in New York and another policeman imprisoned in Maryland over violence.

Officer Sharrod Stewart, 25, was shot in a fight with a group of 100-200 people, early Saturday morning in the Bronx Street, according to Police Commissioner William Bratton.

Gunfire broke out at a house and later spilled into the street. Several other people were also hurt in the shooting.

"There was arguing and then there was screaming," said an unnamed witness. "A cop came by and then there were shots."

The officer is in stable condition, while three suspects, taken to hospital, are in serious condition.

US police jailed for misconduct

In a separate incident, another US police officer has been sentenced to five years in prison for putting his gun to a man’s head in 2014.

Officer Jenchesky Santiago was sentenced on Friday after he was convicted in December of misconduct in office, first- and second-degree assault and use of a handgun during a crime of violence.

The incident that was caught on cellphone video shows Santiago confronted William Cunningham and his cousin in May 2014, as they were sitting in a car parked in front of Cunningham's home and asked why they were there. Santiago pointed his gun at Cunningham's head.

No one, however, was hurt during the confrontation.
