Severing ties cannot hide Saudi crime of executing Sheikh Nimr: Rouhani

  1. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says the Saudi regime cannot hide its crime of executing prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by severing relations with the Islamic Republic. He made the remark during a meeting with Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen in Tehran.
  2. Kuwait has recalled its ambassador to Iran, after a group of Iranian demonstrators outraged at Saudi Arabia's execution of a Shia cleric entered the Saudi Embassy in Tehran over the weekend. Earlier, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Sudan and Djibouti severed all ties with the Islamic Republic.
  3. The Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution criticizes the US for its devastating and bloody invasion of Afghanistan. In a meeting with Afghan Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah in Tehran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the US inflicted heavy losses on Afghanistan. Abdullah also hailed Tehran's support for Kabul.
  4. Turkey will try in absentia US-based opposition figure Fethullah Gulen along with dozens of former officers on Wednesday over graft claims against President Erdogan’s inner circle. Gulen is facing several charges including attempting to bring down the Turkish government and running a terrorist group.
  5. The bodies of more than 20 asylum-seekers, including children, have washed up on a Turkish coast, after their boats sank en route to Greece. According to Turkish authorities, eleven bodies have been discovered in the town of Ayvalik and ten others in the district of Dikil.
  6. Israeli troops have shot and killed yet another Palestinian during an alleged stabbing attack in the occupied West Bank. Reports say an Israeli soldier has been wounded in the incident. At least 145 Palestinian have been killed since the beginning of the ongoing spate of violence in October.
  7. The family of an African-American woman killed by police has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the US city of Chicago. Bettie Jones was one of the two people killed on December 26 after police responded to a domestic dispute call. Police have admitted that her death was a mistake.
  8. A white South Carolina police officer caught on camera fatally shooting an unarmed black man has been bailed out. The Charleston County Sheriff’s office says Michael Slager will be under house arrest until his trial on October 31. Slager was fired from his post as a police officer in April.
