Turkmenistan to discuss gas purchase cut with Gazprom

Turkmenistan says the country seeks 'negotiations' with Russia's energy giant, Gazprom, after it stopped buying natural gas from Ashgabat.

Turkmenistan says it is planning to start "negotiation" with Gazprom after the Russian energy giant decided to cease purchasing natural gas from the Central Asian country.

According to a press release on Monday, the Turkmengaz mentioned "changing conjuncture on the international gas market" and "economic and financial issues arising at Gazprom Export" as the main factors behind the Russian company's decision to slash gas imports from Turkmenistan as of January, AFP reported.

Gazprom officials were not accessible to comment on the issue on Monday.

Russia’s Gazprom was once Turkmenistan's leading purchaser of natural gas, before the role was taken up by the China National Petroleum Company in recent years.

Relations between Moscow and Ashgabat started to become tense after Russia announced in February that it was reducing the amount of natural gas it purchased from Turkmenistan by about two-thirds, mentioning Gazprom's increasing gas production capacity as the main reason.

Turkmengaz, however, accused Gazprom of being an "unstable partner," claiming in July that the Russian energy giant had gone "insolvent" and refused to pay for the natural gas supplied by the Central Asian country.

During the same month, a source close to Gazprom revealed that the company had problem with the price that Turkmen company charged for its natural gas.

The source told AFP that Gazprom has turned to Stockholm's court of arbitration to request that the price of gas in its current contract with Turkmengaz be adjusted to reflect the current market value.
