Several people have been killed in a fresh round of militant attacks on Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo as government forces manage to drive out terrorists from the city's western regions.

Syrian sources said the militant shelling on Monday targeted three main neighborhoods of Aleppo, namely al-Sharafiyah, Neil and Sabil, killing nine and injuring another 35 people.

There was no immediate comment on where the rockets could have emanated from, but militants, who have been pushed back from Aleppo to the city’s outskirts, had launched similar attacks in the past.

Earlier in the day, reports emerged of intensified clashes between government forces in the west of Aleppo with no immediate toll available on the potential casualties. Syrian military said it had managed to destroy some hideouts of the militants in area, inflicting losses on their weaponry and ranks.

The attacks on Aleppo came hours after multiple blasts were reported in Syria's western city of Homs, which left at least 19 people dead and more than 100 injured. The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in the UK and is affiliated to foreign-backed opposition groups, said that the explosions that hit the al-Zahra of Homs had killed more than 30.

Violence by militants in Syria continues days after the United Nations Security Council on December 18 unanimously approved a resolution endorsing an international roadmap for a peace process for the country.

Foreign-backed militants have been carrying out attacks in Syria since March 2011. Official estimates show that the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people so far and left over one million others wounded.
