Iran closer to joining power grid with Russia
Iran’s media reported on Friday that the country has signed a deal with Armenia, Georgia and Russia to synchronize its power grid with them until 2019.
The deal was signed during a visit by Iran’s Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian to Armenia’s capital Yerevan to join his counterparts from the three countries, Mehr News Agency reported.
The deal – once fully implemented - will make it possible for Iran to connect its power grid to Russia’s.
Officials in Tehran have already announced that the most important precondition for this is to synchronize the grids of Iran and Armenia. They have emphasized that both countries have agreed to make the required arrangements to do this in the nearest time possible.
The two countries signed an agreement in August over the construction of the third power transmission line that will enable them to exchange more electricity.
According to the contract, Iran will provide €83 million of the total €107.9 million needed to build the power line. The project is scheduled to be implemented in 18 months to pave the way for the exchange of electricity between Iran and Armenia.
The existing electricity transmission lines between Iran and Armenia are capable of transmitting 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This will increase to 1,000 MW once the third transmission line has been established.
Iran has already started talks with Georgia to invest in the country’s power sector. In May, Hooshang Falahatian, a top Iranian deputy energy minister, said Tehran is ready to build power transmission lines in Georgia – what experts believe could further facilitate the idea to join the power grid of Iran toward Russia.
