Syria army makes new gains in Latakia, retakes height

The photo released by the official Syrian news agency SANA shows Syrian forces during clashes with militants in an unspecified location.

The Syrian military and volunteer fighters have made new gains against militants in the northwestern province of Latakia.

Military sources said on Wednesday that the Syrian forces managed to capture the al-Raqi height, located in the northern countryside of Latakia.

The recapture will enable the Syrian forces to advance on the neighboring al-Sayyed hilltops, and gives them a better control over the positions of terrorists in the area.

The official news agency of Syria, SANA, said in the northern countryside of Hama Province in central Syria, the army inflicted losses on terrorists.

Four members of the al-Nusra Front terrorist group were killed in an attack by the pro-government forces on their positions in the village of Bdama in the neighboring Idlib Province, near the Turkish border.

The Syrian forces continued to secure newly captured positions in Aleppo Province, where the government and allied fighters inflicted almost back-to-back defeats on militants.

Syrian air force also launched a series of air strikes against positions of Daesh Takfiri group around the city of Homs, killing a large number of its members and inflicting huge losses on their weaponry, SANA said.

Syrian fighter jets also carried out attacks on positions of Daesh in eastern outskirts of Homs, destroying a major place of gatherings for the terrorists and killing several of them, the report said.

Syria’s drive against militants saw a major boost since Damascus began to have the Russian air cover on September 30.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people.
