Fate of Nigeria’s Muslim cleric unknown

1. The UN special envoy for Yemen has warned over the fragility of the peace process between the Yemeni warring factions. Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed called for a stronger ceasefire agreement. He said the violations of the truce have affected the talks between the two sides.

2. At least four people have been killed in a US drone attack in central Yemen. The unmanned aerial vehicle targeted a car on the road linking Bayda and Shabwa provinces. US officials say those killed in the drone strike were suspected al-Qaeda militants.

3. The fate of Nigeria’s top Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky remains unknown more than a week after a bloody crackdown against him and his followers. Hundreds of people were reportedly killed after the Nigerian army raided a mosque and the home of the Sheikh in Zaria.

4. Palestinians hold a funeral for a 73-year-old woman who was shot and killed by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank city of al-Khalil also known as Hebron in November. The Israeli military claims the woman had tried to attack a group of Israeli troops with her car.

5. Human Rights Watch warns about the rising number of civilian fatalities in the Kurdish-majority regions of Turkey. The rights group documented 15 civilian deaths during 24-hour curfews in September and November. It also cited a local rights group who put the civilian death toll since July at over 100.

6. At least 10 refugees, including five children have been drowned after their boat sank near a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Local media say another 13 people were rescued and two others are feared missing following the incident. Some 700 people have lost their lives trying to cross the sea to Greece this year.

7. Russia has voiced regret over the extension of the US sanctions against Moscow, saying it will consider possible counter measures. The Kremlin said the sanctions are a continuation of Washington’s unfriendly stance against Russia. The US treasury has announced an updated sanctions list targeting 34 individuals and entities in Russia.

8. Argentines have rallied in the capital Buenos Aires to protest against the economic policies of the country’s new President Mauricio Macri. The protesters demanded that the government give Christmas vouchers to workers to compensate for having their spending power slashed by the currency reforms and soaring inflation.
