A new poll shows that 50 percent of the US voters would be “embarrassed” if Republican front-runner Donald Trump is elected president of the United States.

Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll, said in a statement on Tuesday that "Half of American voters say they'd be embarrassed to have Donald Trump as their Commander in Chief and most Americans think he doesn't have a good chance in November, but there he is still at the top of the Republican heap."

The Quinnipiac poll also revealed that a quarter said they would be “proud” to have the billionaire real estate mogul as their commander-in-chief.

The poll found Trump as the leading Republican candidate with 28 percent of the votes, whereas his closest contender, Senator Ted Cruz, enjoys 24 percent of support.

In the field of Democratic presidential contenders, the two leading candidates, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders, beat Trump in potential match-ups, the poll results showed.

“Hillary Clinton tops him. Senator Bernie Sanders hammers him and Senator Ted Cruz is snapping at his heels. Can a candidate that half the American electorate thinks is an embarrassment win in November?”

Moreover, 59 percent of the polled voters said Clinton has a good chance to defeat a Republican presidential contender during the 2016 election.

With his flagrant disregard for the norms of the Republican Party politics, Trump has led a controversial campaign in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

He has proposed a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims" entering the United States, following last month's mass shooting in California.

The reality TV star has also called for establishment of a database to track Muslims across the United States, and he has said that the US would have "absolutely no choice" but to close down mosques.

The Quinnipiac poll was conducted between December 16 and 20 and has a margin of error for all registered voters of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
