Yannis Behrakis named Guardian photographer of 2015

A picture by Greek photographer Yannis Behrakis shows a Syrian refugee kissing his daughter as he walks through a rainstorm towards Greece's border with Macedonia in September 2015.

British daily Guardian has chosen Yannis Behrakis of Reuters as its agency photographer of the year.

The Greek photojournalist was praised for his coverage of two of the biggest stories of 2015, Europe’s refugee crisis and the financial implosion in his home country.

Born in 1960, Behrakis studied photography in the Athens School of Arts and Technology and London's Middlesex University. 

He has covered various significant events, such as Libya crisis in 1989, the funeral of the founder of Iran's Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as well as the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo, Chechnya, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Afghanistan.

Behrakis has held numerous solo exhibitions and taken part in many group shows in Greece, Britain, Scotland, the US, Italy, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.

Yannis Behrakis has received many international awards, including the European News Photographer of the Year by the European Fuji Awards, News Photographer of the year by the Greek Fuji Awards, the Botsis Foundation Award and the Prix de Public and Bayeux-Calvados Awards for covering the liberation of Kabul.
