5 arrested in New York protest against police killing
Five protesters were violently arrested in New York City during a demonstration to condemn the handling of last year’s shooting death of an African-American teenager by a white police officer in Chicago.
The protest was held on Monday in Midtown Manhattan after video footage was released of the fatal shooting by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke that killed Laquan McDonald, 17, last year.
One activist and protest organizer recorded video of one of the arrests on Monday night, which he called “violent” on the part of police at a peaceful protest. Keegan Stephan reported that the person arrested in the video was 16 years old.
In the video, police are seen handcuffing protesters, and officers appear to be struggling to restrain them. Others at the protest are heard calling an arresting officer a “pig” and demanding his badge number.
The protesters who were arrested were charged with obstruction of governmental administration, police said.
In the Chicago police killing that sparked the protest, McDonald was shot 16 times in a span of 15 seconds by Van Dyke, who was charged with first-degree murder late last month.
Numerous rallies were held in Chicago and several major cities in recent weeks over McDonald’s death.
Critics have alleged a cover-up in the case, since it took more than a year since McDonald was killed to bring criminal charges.
They also say there are written reports from officers at the shooting scene that do not fit the police dashcam video of the incident.
