Venezuelans voting in congressional elections
1. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says the British and French airstrikes in his country are illegal and will help spread terrorism. Assad has told The Sunday Times that London and Paris helped the rise of the terrorists. He said they have neither the will nor the vision on how to defeat the terrorists.
2. Governor of Yemen’s southern Aden province has been assassinated. Jaafar Mohammed Saad lost his life when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his convoy in the provincial capital Aden. Six of his bodyguards also died. The ISIL has claimed responsibility for the attack. Aden is now controlled by pro-Hadi forces.
3. Egypt has arrested nine police officers in connection with the death of a man in custody in the city of Luxor last month. He was beaten on his back and neck. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned last week that the judiciary would punish officers guilty of committing abuses.
4. Israel has detained eight Palestinians in operations in the occupied West Bank. They're suspected of conducting violent acts. Israeli forces conduct night raids and make arrests on a nearly daily basis. Over 1,200 Palestinians have been detained since the beginning of October.
5. People in Venezuela are voting in congressional elections amid an unprecedented economic contradiction. Voters are electing 167 National Assembly members. Some opinion polls suggest the election could see the opposition seize legislative power from President Nicolas Maduro’s government.
6. Poland says it is planning to strengthen its deterrent capability through access to NATO’s nuclear arsenals under a nuclear sharing program. Non-nuclear members of the alliance can borrow weapons from the US. Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey have, so far, hosted nuclear weapons as part of the program.
7. Polls have opened in the first round of regional elections in France. The far-right National Front party and the center-right Les Republicans party led by former president Nicolas Sarkozy are expected to make huge gains. Some 44 million people are eligible to vote.
8. Students in Britain have staged rallies to demand cuts to housing costs and compensation from universities. Students in Durham and the University College London are planning events to demand rent cuts. A recent survey showed that half of Britain's university students are struggling to pay their rent.
