China backs Russian anti-terror campaign in Syria, calls for global support

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying

China says it supports Russia’s anti-terror war in Syria, and urges the international community to make joint efforts to combat terrorism in accordance with the international law and with respect to the sovereignty of nations.

“We have always supported the efforts of various countries, including Russia, to ensure international security. As for Russia’s strikes against terrorist organizations in Syria, we have also expressed our support previously,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying stated at a press briefing on Friday, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

She further said Beijing opposes all forms of terrorism, and added that it has always supported anti-terrorist actions that conform to international law, and also the ones approved by the government of a particular country.

Russia launched its air campaign against the Takfiris, including the Daesh terrorist group, in Syria on September 30, upon a request from the Syrian government and after the upper house of the Russian parliament gave President Vladimir Putin the green light to use force in Syria.

The foreign-backed militancy in Syria, which started in March 2011, has left over 250,000 people dead.

According to the United Nations, the violence has left more than 7.3 million people internally displaced and forced more than four million others to take refuge in neighboring countries such as Lebanon and Jordan.
