Obama pays tribute to victims of Paris terrorist attacks
US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks shortly after arriving in the French capital on Sunday.
Obama, who is in Paris for the United Nations Climate Change Conference on Monday, was joined at the site of the attack by the French President François Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Obama placed a flower at the makeshift memorial and then stood silently, his head bowed and hands clasped in front of him.
A state of emergency has been in place in France ever since November 13, when a string of coordinated terrorist attacks killed some 130 people and injured 350 others in Paris.
The Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, which controls swaths of land in Syria and Iraq, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
France is part of a US-led coalition that has been bombing purported Daesh targets in Syria and Iraq for over a year, but the air campaign has been largely ineffective.
France has intensified its attacks against the alleged positions of Daesh in Syria and Iraq following the Paris attacks, which were the deadliest assault on French soil since World War ll.
However, some independent American analysts say the United States and NATO likely orchestrated the attacks to close their borders to refugees and ramp up the war in Syria in order to counter Russia, which has been conducting air strikes there against Daesh terrorists since September 30.
