Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the implementation of the July 14 nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 will help Tehran and the European Union reach the desired level of economic relations.

In a meeting with the visiting Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Sunday, President Rouhani said the sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program have had adverse effects on the level of international cooperation.

“If member states of the P5+1 group and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are committed to fully implementing the … JCPOA, the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to implement the agreement as well,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president also pointed to the great potential in Tehran-Athens ties for further strengthening of bilateral cooperation, urging the two sides to make use of bilateral capabilities to improve relations in all areas of common interest.

He added that cordial relations between Iran and Greece have always been based on mutual respect.

“Following the implementation of the JCPOA and the lifting of cruel sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, relations between the two countries should further improve,” Rouhani said.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna, Austria.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.

The Greek foreign minister also said his country attaches importance to political, economic and cultural relations with Iran given the two countries’ rich civilization and great potential.

He added that Tehran and Athens should start direct flights as soon as possible.
