Brits oppose military adventurism in Syria: Pundit

Press TV has interviewed Shahrar Ali, deputy leader of the UK Green Party from London, and Ian Williams, a senior analyst with the Foreign Policy in Focus from New York, to discuss a recent anti-war demonstration in London against Britain’s possible participation in the bombing campaign in Syria.

Ali says British people are reacting angrily even at the suggestion that the UK may take part in the military campaign in Syria as they still remember the negative impacts of Britain’s role in the US-invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, which caused a power vacuum in those states and gave rise to extremism there.

He adds that the protesters in London want the British parliamentarians to listen to public calls and avoid hysterical and unwise adventurism in another independent country.

Such military intervention could raise civilian casualties in Syria, where Takfiri terror groups are wreaking havoc, and put security at stake in Britain, the activist mentions, noting that Britons do not want to see “increased” threats on the streets of London.

Warning about the repercussions of foreign military involvement in Syria conflict, Ali says lessons from history show any escalation of the situation in the Arab country must be avoided.

Williams, for his part, describes as “ineffective” the air raids that inflict huge civilian casualties, saying such measures are “politically counterproductive” and “not part of a long well-sorted out strategy.”

He says Britain is not entitled to militarily intervene in Syria since the UN Security Council has not authorized this move.
