Russian Air Force: Turkish downing of Russian bomber intentional

News in Brief

1. The commander of the Russian Air Force says evidence proves that Turkey's downing of a Russian bomber on Syrian border was intentional and pre-planned. Colonel General Viktor Bondarev says two Turkish F16s were flying in an area close to the attack zone for about an hour before the assault.

2. A retired US army major general says Turkey should be kicked out of NATO for its provocations and stance on the conflict in Syria. Paul Vallely told Russian media that Ankara is pursuing its own interests in Syria, and refuses to cooperate with NATO or other forces in the region.

3. A bomb has hit the convoy of a member of Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission. Hawliya Rodwal escaped unharmed when his convoy came under attack in the capital Kabul. At least two people including his bodyguard were killed and three others wounded.

4. Millions of Muslim pilgrims are arriving in Iraq's shrine city of Karbala ahead of Arba'een. The ceremony on Thursday marks forty days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam. A couple of million people from neighboring Iran also take part in the ceremony every year.

5. Saudi warplanes have targeted a civilian area in Ta’izz province killing at least a dozen people. A dozen airstrikes also targeted Lahij province. Reports say internationally banned cluster bombs were used in the attacks. Meanwhile, the Yemeni army launched a retaliatory attack in Jizan region.

6. At least 4 government forces have been killed in clashes with gunmen near the Egyptian capital Cairo. The assailants opened fire on a security checkpoint. Egypt has been witnessing a deadly militancy since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi back in July 2013.

7. The British capital is preparing for a massive demonstration against the proposed Syria airstrikes. Advocacy group, Stop the War Coalition, is organizing the rally outside Downing Street in London. Anti-war activists have also called on other groups to organize similar events in other British towns and cities.

8. Pope Francis is in Uganda on the second leg of a tour of Africa which he says is aimed at bridging the schism between Christians and Muslims. Francis entered Uganda after concluding his three-day trip to Kenya on Friday. The pontiff will leave Uganda for Central African Republic.
