A senior member of Afghanistan’s election commission has survived a bomb attack, which left one person dead and another wounded in the capital, Kabul.

Afghan media quoted local officials as saying that a bomber targeted Hawliya Rodwal’s car when he was leaving his home and getting into the vehicle in the residential neighborhood of Karta-e-Naw in the east of Kabul on Saturday morning.

The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan said Saturday’s bomb attack was aimed at Rodwal.

Noor Mohammad Noor, a spokesman for the commission, also said one of Rodwal’s security guards was killed while his driver sustained injuries, adding that several homes were also damaged in the assault.

An investigation is reportedly underway into the incident.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but Afghan officials usually blame the Taliban militant group for such incidents.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity nearly 14 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. Although the 2001 attack overthrew the Taliban, many areas across the Asian state still face violence and insecurity.

Over the past few months, Afghan security forces have stepped up offensives against militant hideouts in the war-torn country.
