Hollande urges UK MPs to join fight against Daesh

  1. French President Francois Hollande has called on British lawmakers to support Prime Minister David Cameron’s call to join the fight against Daesh in Syria. Cameron made the appeal to the House of Commons on Thursday noting that the strikes would make Britain a safer place.
  2. Turkish protesters gather outside the office of Jumhuriat daily in Istanbul a day after authorities arrested two journalists who had published pictures of the country’s intelligence agency sending arms to militants in Syria. The demonstrators accused Ankara of attempting to cover up its alleged role in arming anti-Damascus militants.
  3. Saudi airstrikes have killed at least one person and injured three others in the Yemeni province of Ta'izz. Earlier, Saudi warplanes killed one civilian in the same province. Riyadh’s relentless bombing of Yemen has claimed the lives of nearly 72-hundred people since late March.
  4. The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has warned of a worsening situation for children in war-torn South Sudan. The U-N agency said some 16-thousand children, mostly boys, have been forced to join the conflict which escalated in 2013.
  5. At least two civilians and one police officer have been killed in a shooting incident in and around a Planned Parenthood building in the U-S city of Colorado Springs. Police have arrested the gunman following an hours-long standoff which left several others wounded.
  6. In the U-S city of Chicago, thousands rally to condemn the fatal shooting of African-American teen Laquan McDonald by a white police officer in 2014. The demonstrators demanded justice for McDonald whose tragic death video was published on Tuesday and caused nationwide outcry.
  7. Controversial remarks made by US presidential hopeful Donald Trump in the wake of Paris attacks have caused the Republican candidate to lose 12 percent popularity among his party members. Following the attacks, Trump said he would set up a data base of all Muslims within the U-S.
  8. Riot police in Peru have clashed with hundreds of striking public workers who staged a protest rally against working conditions in the capital Lima. Workers from health, judicial and education sectors participated in the demonstration. They demanded bonus payments and higher salaries.
