Iran calls on Turkey, Russia to exercise restraint
1. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Turkey has crossed the line by shooting down a Russian bomber. He added that Moscow has decided to suspend visa-free regime with Ankara from January first. Lavrov also questioned the sincerity of Ankara in fighting terrorism.
2. The Kremlin says Western powers are not ready yet to form a coalition with Russia to fight Daesh terrorists in Syria. The remarks came a day after French President Francois Hollande met his Russian counterpart in Moscow in a bid to unite their efforts against the terror group.
3. Iran’s deputy foreign minister has called on Moscow and Ankara to exercise restraint as tensions rise over Turkey’s downing of a Russian plane. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the most important issue in the region today is fighting terrorism, and any measure that would divert attentions from terrorism, benefits terrorists.
4. French President Francois Hollande has vowed to retaliate against those who carried out the deadly attacks in capital Paris on November 13. Hollande made the remarks in a ceremony held for the victims of the attacks. At least 130 people lost their lives in the carnage.
5. Rights groups say the state of emergency in France could lead to abuses. Rights activists have documented instances of armed police breaking into people’s houses, searching homes and arresting residents without warrants or judicial oversight. A member of the Collective of French Muslims has also warned against stigmatization of Muslim citizens.
6. Mali has arrested two men suspected of being involved in last week’s deadly attack at a hotel in the capital Bamako. The information found in the cell-phone belonging to one of the attackers led to the arrests. The attack left 20 people dead.
7. Activists in Mexico City have staged a demonstration demanding justice for the 43 students who went missing over a year ago in the state of Guerrero. The government claims that the students were burned in a rubbish dump by a drug cartel but Rights groups say they have no evidence to confirm this.
8. Israeli forces have shot dead two Palestinians in separate incidents east of Jerusalem al-Quds and north of al-Khalil. Israelis say they killed the two men after they rammed their cars into soldiers and wounded a number of them.
