Israelis have killed a Palestinian in the south of the occupied West Bank following an alleged stabbing attack amid heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians there.

The incident took place at the Al Fawwar junction near the city of al-Kalil (Hebron) on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for Shaare Zedek hospital in al-Quds (Jerusalem), whose name was not revealed, said the Palestinian, who was shot at the scene, was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts failed.

A doctor also said that the Palestinian had suffered bullet wounds to his stomach and chest.

The Palestinian was identified as Mohammad Shubaki, 19, from the Al Fawwar refugee camp.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said in a statement the Palestinian wounded an Israeli, adding that Israeli “forces on site fired at the attacker."

According to medical sources, the injured Israeli was in stable condition.

In another incident on Wednesday, four Palestinians sustained injuries by Israeli live bullets in the West Bank city of Tulkarem after Israeli troops stormed the campus of Palestine Technical University (Kadoorie) and clashed with Palestinian students.

Wednesday's incidents are the latest in nearly two months of violence in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

At least 97 Palestinians and almost 20 Israelis have been killed in the recent wave of clashes since the start of October.

Tensions have dramatically escalated since the Israeli regime’s imposition of restrictions in August on the entry of Palestinian worshipers to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds.

Palestinians say Tel Aviv seeks to change the status quo of al-Aqsa. They are also angry with Israeli extremists who, escorted by army forces, have stepped up their raids on the sensitive site, Islam’s third holiest after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.
