Bus crash leaves 24 dead, 10 injured in central Mexico

A photo released by Australia’s AAP newswire shows firefighters at the scene of a fiery bus crash in Mexico on November 24, 2015.

In Mexico, two dozen people have been killed and 10 others wounded when a bus collided with a car, causing a fire that engulfed both vehicles.

The accident took place on Monday when the car slammed into the passenger bus on a highway in the state of Puebla near Mexico’s Gulf coast, authorities said in a statement.

At least 22 of the victims were killed on the bus, while the other two were the driver and the passenger of the car, who died after their vehicle was consumed by flames.

Authorities were on the scene, according to local media, trying to identify the dead passengers, mostly students, on the bus.

The State Civil Defense Office released a statement, saying that an investigation into the crash showed the car apparently struck the bus’ doors, preventing the occupants from getting out.

Flames then consumed both vehicles, while only 10 passengers managed to get out of the bus through the windows.

According to reports, multiple police and fire departments were dealing with the situation.
