Car bombs, gunfire kill 10 in, around Iraqi capital

Medical and security officials in Iraq say at least ten people have been killed and more than two dozen others injured in separate bomb blasts and shooting attack in and around the capital, Baghdad.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least two civilians were killed and seven others sustained injuries when a bomb went off close to a popular market in Baghdad’s western neighborhood of al-Forat on Saturday, Arabic-language al-Baghdadia satellite television network reported.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the site of the attack, and ambulance workers ferried the wounded to a nearby hospital.

Unknown armed men also stormed a security checkpoint in the town of Yusufiyah, situated 40 kilometers (24 miles) south of Baghdad, killing two police officers and a civilian passerby.

Additionally, a civilian was killed and six others injured, when a bomb detonated near a busy market in in Baghdad's eastern neighborhood of al-Mashtal on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the al-Arifiyah district of southern Baghdad, a roadside bombing attack claimed one civilian life and left four others injured.

Earlier on Saturday, a roadside bomb exploded in Hur neighborhood of southern Baghdad, leaving one policeman dead and three others injured.

Another policeman was also gunned down in Baghdad’s southern neighborhood of Dora, when unidentified assailants launched an attack in Arab Jubur area south of Baghdad.

Moreover, six civilians were injured when two separate bombs exploded in Baghdad’s central district of Karrada and in the Habibiyah district of eastern Baghdad.

Gunman also fatally shot a 10-year-old child in Baghdad’s northern neighborhood of Hussainiyah, and an improvised explosive device claimed a civilian life in the town of Madain, situated about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of the capital.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 714 Iraqis were killed and another 1,269 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in October alone.

According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 559. Violence also claimed the lives of 155 members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 298 civilians were killed.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh Takfiri militants began their march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
