US can 'neutralize' Daesh faster than it did al-Qaeda, Kerry says
The United States would "neutralize" the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group much faster than it was able to do with al-Qaeda, according to US Secretary of State John Kerry.
"We are going to defeat Daesh. We always said it will take time," Kerry said on Thursday, using an Arabic name for the terrorist network wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria.
"We began our fight against al-Qaeda in 2001 and it took us quite a few years before we were able to eliminate Osama bin Laden and the top leadership and neutralize them as an effective force. We hope to do Daesh much faster than that and we think we have an ability to do that," he told reporters in Washington, DC.
"President Obama has already ordered increased efforts. He has been doing that before the Paris attacks, over the course of the last months -- increased efforts, and we are seeing the results of those in ways," Kerry said,
"And I am confident that if we stay steady, keep our heads in thinking creatively, but also being strong and committed to our fundamental values, we are going to defeat Daesh," he added.
Kerry's comments came a week after bombers and gunmen launched coordinated attacks in and around the French capital on Friday night, killing at least 129 people and injuring more than 350 others.
ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, have claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in France. They now control parts of Syria and Iraq.
However, some independent American analysts like former White House official Paul Craig Roberts say the United States and NATO actually orchestrated the Paris attacks as a “false flag” to enter the Syrian war in order to counter Russia, which has been conducting air strikes in Syria against ISIL terrorists since September 30.
Russian fighter jets have also attacked the CIA-trained militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to US officials.
“This was a false flag attack,” Roberts, a former assistant secretary of the US treasury, told Press TV on Monday. “It does not serve ISIL, but it does serve the Western political establishment.”
