Jeb Bush calls for US military buildup after Paris attacks
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush has called for a broad US military buildup to fight the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, which he said has now “declared war on the Western world.”
"This is the war of our time," Bush said in a speech on Wednesday. "Terrorists have declared war on the Western world. Their aim is our total destruction. We can't withdraw from this threat, or negotiate with it. We have but one choice: to defeat it."
Five days after a string of attacks took the lives of at least 132 people in Paris, Bush called for “developing the capability” of US forces “to wage war with crushing force” against ISIL, which claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.
He called for increasing the size of the US Army by 40,000 soldiers and the size of the Marine Corps by 4,000 Marines, as well as adding new submarines and aircraft to the military.
"The United States, in conjunction with our NATO allies and more Arab partners, will need to increase our presence on the ground," he said.
The former Florida governor also said the US-led air campaign was insufficient to combat the terrorist group.
“The United States should not delay in leading a global coalition to take out ISIS with overwhelming force,” he said, using another acronym for the terror network.
Bush, the brother and son of former presidents, denounced what he described as “careless, chronic neglect by the president and Congress” of the US military.
He suggested that the number of American troops sent to the Middle East should be "in line with what our military generals recommend, not politicians."
Bush previously called for the US to "declare war" against ISIL and urged the use of "massive force" to take out the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.
Following the Paris attacks, President Barack Obama vowed to ramp up airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, but ruled out the possibility of deploying more US ground troops.
Daesh terrorists, some of whom were among CIA-trained militants sent to fight the Syrian government in 2012, now control territory in Iraq and Syria, committing heinous acts of terrorism against all communities.
