5 Syrians, one Palestinian detained over Beirut bombings
Authorities in Lebanon have arrested six suspects in connection with the recent deadly twin bombings in central part of the capital, Beirut.
A senior security source said on Saturday that the detainees include five Syrians and a Palestinian.
"Within 24 hours the network was arrested in the fastest uncovering of a bombing incident in the country," the source added.
On Thursday, 44 people were killed and nearly 240 others sustained injuries when two large explosions rocked a security post in Hussaineya Street in the crowded Borj al-Barajneh neighborhood in a southern suburb of Beirut.
The Daesh Takfiri terrorist group claimed responsibility for the bombings. In a statement posted online, the extremist group said its members exploded a bike loaded with explosives in the area and that when people gathered at the site a bomber carried out another blast among them.
Following the terror attack, Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah vowed to press ahead with its battle against terrorists.
"What happened here is a crime... this battle against terrorists will continue and it is a long war between us," Hussein Khalil, an assistant to the movement’s leader, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, said from the site of the terror attack.
Amnesty International also censured the blasts, saying the attack revealed “appalling disregard for human life.”
Over the past months, a large number of people have lost their lives in terrorist attacks in the Lebanese capital and some areas in the country’s east.
This comes as the Lebanese army and Hezbollah have been carrying out operations for months against the terrorist groups of al-Nusra Front and Daesh in the Lebanese town of Arsal on the border with Syria. Hezbollah has also been helping the government in Damascus in its fight against terrorists in Syria.
Daesh Takfiris have committed gruesome crimes and terrorized members of various communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians during their onslaught in Iraq and Syria.
