Iran, the US and the European Union (EU) have held a meeting to draw up a text of mechanisms for the removal of sanctions against Tehran based on the nuclear agreement reached between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 group in July.

During their nine-hour meeting in the Swiss city of Geneva on Saturday, representatives of Iran, the US and the EU discussed the framework of directives that need to be issued by the European and American sides regarding their obligations stipulated in the nuclear agreement.

The Iranian delegation from the country’s Foreign Ministry and the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) stressed the importance of formulating executive directives for the removal of sanctions on schedule and put forward clear suggestions in this regard.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia - plus Germany finalized the text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) over Iran’s nuclear program in the Austrian capital of Vienna on July 14.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.

On October 18, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a joint statement that the EU had "adopted the legislative framework for the lifting of all nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions against Iran."

For the decision to take effect, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must certify that Iran has met its commitments under the JCPOA. The IAEA is expected to issue its report on Iran on December 15.
