US Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush says the deadly attacks in Paris represent “the war of our time,” arguing that the United States should step up its fight against the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

"This is the war of our time," Bush said on a radio program. "And we have to be serious in engaging and creating a strategy to confront it and take it out."

A series of coordinated attacks in and around the French capital of Paris left as many as 153 people dead and some 200 others injured on Friday night.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Bush said the attacks were part of “an organized effort to destroy western civilization,” adding that the US needs to “lead” the fight against it.

The former Florida governor argued that the US should boost its intelligence sharing with European allies to defeat Daesh. He also called for the US to expand its military involvement in the Middle East.

Senator Marco Rubio, another Republican contender for the White House, said in a statement that, “We must increase our efforts at home and abroad to improve our defenses, destroy terrorist networks, and deprive them of the space from which to operate.”

President Barack Obama condemned the “outrageous” terrorist attacks in Paris, and promised his administration is ready to provide whatever assistance is necessary to the French government and people.

The attacks came just hours after an interview aired in which Obama boasted about recent successes against Daesh. "I don't think they're gaining strength," Obama told ABC News' "Good Morning America." "We have contained them."

In his brief televised statement delivered from the White House, the US president declined to speculate who might be behind the Paris attacks.

Obama has been criticized for not having a clear strategy against Daesh more than a year after he ordered an open-ended air campaign against the group in Iraq and Syria.
